MetalLife.com Interview With David McKendry (Fangoria magazine)
By: Terry Bunch
Date: July 25th, 2010 While at San Diego Comic Con 2010, we stopped by the Fangoria booth to check out the new Municipal Waste music video, which was directed by Fangoria's David McKendry. The music video for the track "Acid Sentence" is full of the expected blood and gore and well worth checking out. The video adds to the enjoyment of the song by creating a suspenseful horror environment.

1. Metal Life Magazine: So you just did the Municipal Waste "Acid Sentence" music video. What brought that about?

David McKendry: Basically, we moved down to Richmond from New York, just to shoot a few things for our video on demand channel and Fangoria. We got in touch with them through a mutual acquaintance and they wanted to do a video, they wanted to do something really horror and gory and we were like Yeah, we're down here, we want to shoot some stuff.

2. Metal Life Magazine: So where was the video shot?

David McKendry: Shot in Richmond, we had an abandoned paper factory that we shot part of it, we had a really cool vintage living room. There some other places all around the city really.

3. Metal Life Magazine: What other projects are you working on with Fangoria as far as movies?

David McKendry: There isn't anything that I can actually announce yet, but we have Fangoria Video On Demand coming up, so there's a few shows we're shooting for that. We're working on some series and some short films.

4. Metal Life Magazine: Are you working with any other bands?

David McKendry: No, not so far.

5. Metal Life Magazine: Is that something that you may want to explore?

David. Yeah, we're going to branch out and talk with some of the labels and see if they want to do something that's got a Fangoria edge to it.

6. Metal Life Magazine: For upcoming movies, how would a band that is not represented by a label yet contact you as far as maybe providing music for soundtracks, etc.?

David. I think the best way to go through us is our marketing producer Rebekah McKendry, who can be reached at rebekah@fangoria.com She's the primary contact and the best way to get to us. If the bands want to contact us and maybe we can see what we can do to support them.

7. Metal Life Magazine: We have worked with some bands in the past that had landed up doing actual classical pieces and non metal music for soundtracks. The music they wrote was creepy and eerie since it was for a horror movie. Have you ever worked with a band to create a soundtrack or was it more hiring specific musicians?

David McKendry: We're been hiring musicians for the soundtracks, I've worked with a lot of composers that did work digitally who put together things on their own. It's great when you find a band that's willing to lend a song, but for the most part, with it being digital, its easy for one person to create something on their own.

8. Metal Life Magazine: For the benefit of people who may not be familiar with your work, what other projects have you worked on in the past?

David McKendry: In the past I've done a lot of short films with Fangoria, mostly online, web based stuff. I came out of the interview field as well. I interview bands including The Misfits, Clutch, doing a lot of interviews with Gwar and stuff like that. With Fangoria, its not nailed down to one thing.

9. Metal Life Magazine: How would someone submit articles for publication consideration in Fangoria magazine?

David McKendry: The same resource, Becka McKendry, rebekah@fangoria.com We work the hell out of her and she filters everything through everyone else.

10. Metal Life Magazine: Since you can't talk about any other projects...

David McKendry: (laughs)

11. Metal Life Magazine: ... are there any hints that you give us?

I would say, look for a Video On Demand series that we are going to be shooting in a very interesting way, a combination of horror and comedy.
