MetalLife.com Interview With Jason Demarco (Adult Swim)
By: Terry Bunch
Date: Oct, 2010
1. Metal Life Magazine: Tell us about Metal Swim. What is it?
Jason Demarco: "Metal Swim is a free downloadable album of new, rare or unreleased music from 16 different metal bands, put together and presented by Adult Swim and Scion A/V."
Editor Note: More details on Metal Swim is available HERE.
2. Metal Life Magazine: Who had the fun job of choosing which songs would be included on the Metal Swim compilation?
Jason Demarco: "That WAS a fun job. Basically, I worked with Scion A/V and made a list of bands I wanted to include on the comp. Together, Adult Swim and Scion narrowed the list down and picked the ones we really wanted to be a part of the project. I had a pretty huge list… like 25 bands. One of my favorites was the Skeleton Witch track, which we also have the video for."
3. Metal Life Magazine: How did you determine which bands to drop from the list? Was there any specific criteria?
Jason Demarco: "None of the bands that were dropped from the list were actually dropped. They just weren't available to work with us on this project at the time. Some of them were on tour or otherwise committed and unavailable. Hopefully, we will put together another Metal Swim and those bands that were not included will be the first on our list to contact."
4. Metal Life Magazine: How did Cartoon Network and Scion land up promoting heavy metal songs?
Jason Demarco: "Well Adult Swim has always had a pretty strong musical point of view in our shows and our packaging on-air. Shows like Boondocks, Freaknik, Tim and Eric, Squidbillies, and of course Metalocalypse all have very strong musical identities that our fans clearly identify with. On the promotional side, this is our TENTH free online album (go download some!), so it was only a matter of time before we got to the metal genre, especially since I'm a big fan, personally. Scion A/V was a perfect fit because they already put on the Scion Metal Fest, and they have such great relationships with metal bands and the metal community."
5. Metal Life Magazine: What other promotions have you worked on with Scion?
Jason Demarco: "We work with them every year, but this is the first venture of this type we've collaborated on. And I really think it makes so much sense, I hope we get to do more of these!"
6. Metal Life Magazine: Metalocalypse is back with a new season. Can you tell us about what we can expect from the new episodes?
Jason Demarco: "I can't talk too much about that, other than to say that anyone who's a fan of the show, won't be disappointed. The new songs rip, so there's that. That's important to me, anyway. And besides, Brendon would kill me if I told you anything about the show."
7. Metal Life Magazine: Adult Swim, by nature, attracts a lot of our readers since the content is non-mainstream and often edgy. Can you give us any hints about upcoming shows that are coming to Adult Swim?
Jason Demarco: "They barely let me out of my cage to talk to you now, man! If I start giving away upcoming stuff, they'll never let me see the light of day!"
8. Metal Life Magazine: Metal Life Magazine focuses a lot of our attention on the things that metal fans are interested in such as video games and movies. What are some of your interests?
Jason Demarco: "BESIDES music, I 'm a hardcore gamer who plays videogames constantly. I also read a ton, and I'm a huge movie nerd. I'm a media junkie… any kind of media. Making it, consuming it. Love it all."
9. Metal Life Magazine: Is there anything else that we haven't covered that you would like share?
Jason Demarco: "Nope, just would like to say thanks to anyone who downloaded the album, I hope you liked it. I had a ton of fun making it and I can't wait to do it again."
